Method

Make inspection capability measurable.

VQI is a structured methodology for assessing the capability and reliability of classification-based inspection processes. It originated in visual quality inspection — still its most common field of application — but its decision-based framework can also be applied to other qualifying inspections and to both human inspectors and camera-based systems.

Theoretical framework

Eight principles that define the VQI approach.

VQI looks beyond a simple percentage of correct answers. It combines controlled references, repeated decisions, sample design and structured evaluation to show how reliably an inspection process performs — and where improvement may be needed.

01 / DECISION SYSTEM

Inspection as a structured decision process

Every inspection result is treated as a classification decision that can be compared with a defined reference. This makes inspection capability measurable rather than something that must be assumed from experience alone.

02 / REFERENCE

Reliable reference decisions

An assessment is only as meaningful as the reference behind it. VQI therefore places particular emphasis on establishing controlled and professionally reliable reference decisions against which inspection results can be evaluated consistently.

03 / SAMPLE DESIGN

Sample composition and difficulty matter

The assessment sample is part of the measurement system. Its stability, size, composition, balance and difficulty influence the result, so these factors must be controlled if assessments are to remain meaningful and comparable.

04 / CONSISTENCY & CORRECTNESS

Repeatability and decision correctness

Repeated classifications show whether decisions are consistent when the same inspection challenge is encountered again. Comparing those decisions with the reference also shows how often the inspection process reaches the correct conclusion. Together, these are central elements of VQI capability assessment.

05 / ERROR DIRECTION

Not every wrong decision creates the same risk

Rejecting a conforming item and accepting a non-conforming item can have very different operational, financial and customer consequences. VQI distinguishes these decision directions and can account for the context in which different errors matter.

06 / CAPABILITY RESULT

One interpretable capability result

VQI brings the key dimensions of inspection performance together in Dozsa’s WSR% (Weighted Summary Result), combining repeatability and decision correctness into one principal capability measure. Qualification levels then translate the result into a clear and practical status for use within the organisation.

07 / APPLICATION

Human, camera-based, binary or ranked

The method is not limited to human visual inspection. It can be applied to human or automated camera-based inspection systems and to both binary decisions and ordinal, ranked classifications. Visual inspection remains the most typical application, but the underlying logic is broader.

08 / DIGITAL IMPLEMENTATION

VQI Master turns the method into a controlled workflow

VQI Master provides the dedicated digital environment for managing sample collections, assessments, evaluation and traceability. It supports consistent implementation of the methodology while keeping the professional logic of VQI at the centre.

From assessment to improvement

The purpose of VQI is not simply to generate a score. The result provides structured evidence for qualification, targeted training, calibration, system validation and continuous improvement — helping organisations focus development where it can create the greatest quality and business value.

Protected methodological know-how

This public overview explains the principles of the VQI method. The exact calculation model, WSR% implementation, algorithms, weighting, qualification thresholds, sample-difficulty logic, statistical treatment and other parameters required to reproduce the complete evaluation system remain protected methodological know-how.

The method is the foundation. VQI Master makes it operational.

Use the methodology within a controlled digital environment for repeatable assessment, evaluation and traceability.
